Why transfer?
Perhaps, like me, you too have been hearing or reading about the increasing global call for reskilling and/or upskilling out in the workplace. There seems to be a growing need and urgency to fill the expanding or newly emerging skills gaps as well as shrink the time to profiency amongst our workforces. In a world where learning is labelled paramount to success there is an exponentially related call for effective transfer. You may not specifically be asking for or calling it “transfer” but I’d imagine you want:

In other words, you’d like for people to apply their learning once they are back in the workplace, which is what transfer is all about. Because you realize that knowing is not enough. People have to do. Transfer is what happens when people move from knowing to doing to performing. The finish line is not the end of a training event when learners leave happy and motivated. The real finish line is when people successfully implement their learnings to perform better in their job. Looking into the future it seems highly unlikely that we can continue training the way we have been. We need training that really works to get us sustained results. The key here is effective transfer.
