I don’t sprinkle pixie dust…

. . . although the idea of doing so is very tempting!

How magical it would be to have pixie-dust sprinkled learners return from training with their new knowledge and skills fully operational and competent to perform. In reality we know that it will take time, application, lots of practice, reflection, feedback, and support to get there.

In 2020 when I embraced self-employment I realized I had not been doing the best possible job I could have done throughout my career in Learning & Development - despite full courses, raving reviews, and my NPS hitting 100-percent more often than not.

The reason was simple: designing or delivering training without transfer wasn't worth much of anything! Doing what I could to get my delegates to apply their learnings once they were back in the workplace was a good intention but I never really did all I could have to ensure that this really happened.

Additionally I'd noticed that despite investing time and energy in my personal development over the years, I often walked away from a training enthusiastic, head full of inspiration, only to end up doing ... nothing! Many of my notes and workbooks continue to collect dust even to this day.

Maybe you've experienced similar situations? Life has a way of getting in the way, doesn't it? Soon, applying what was learned is no more than a fleeting thought in a busy world.

Since then, I've learned that the transfer problem - also known as 'learning application challenge', 'making learning stick', 'the elephant in the room', etc. - can be solved. That there are ways of managing transfer, systematically and lasting. They are simple, practical, and scientifically proven. They are the real pixie dust!

So the idea was born for me to bring more transfer into the world. Today I coach individuals and work with people and organizations to achieve desired results from optimized learning and development initiatives.

My vision is for L&D professionals everywhere to embed transfer into their code of conduct; and I am passionate about accompanying people on their quest to move from knowing to doing to performing.

That is my North Star and if you feel it could be your purposeful destination as well, let's talk!
